Scientific Activity

The scientific activity of Dr. Puliafito is focused on studying distributed and networked systems. Topics developed in

this context include parallel processing, problems connected with reliability and fault tolerance and advanced

programming techniques based on agents technology. Specific applications regard network and quality of service

management. He is currently investigating issues related with user mobility and security, in wireless and ad hoc

networks. Emphasis is currently being devoted also in Grid and Cloud computing and to the adoption of such

paradigms to provide advanced multimedia services to final users. Specific interests involve RFID technology and its

applications. His research activity includes:

System modelling and Performance evaluation

Reliability and fault tolerance

Multimedia systems

Wireless and RFID systems

GRID and Cloud computing

FIRB project “WEBMINDS (Middleware for advanced services in wired-wireless distributed systems)

CNR project "Software infrastructures for ad hoc networks in complex environments"

Project 297 “ISID: Security techniques in distributed information systems”.

TRIGRID project, a 3.7 M€ project which aims to create a GRID infrastructure in Sicily to provide high

computing services to the whole research community.

PI2S2 project, a 11 M€ project which extends and improves the Sicilian GRID computing infrastructure.

RESERVOIR Project, a 17M€ IST project which aims to study and develop virtualization techniques in GRID

environments.

Project “Ponte digitale”, a 4.0M€ project financed from the Italian Ministry on Innovation technologies which

aims to establish an high speed wired-wireless communication infrastructure between Sicily and Calabria.

Project SET “Eco-efficient transportation systems” , a 4.0 M€ project financed from the Italian Ministry of

Economy on the design and adoption of a new automatic vehicle location system for public transport

companies.

During his research activity, Dr. Puliafito has actively contributed in developing the following software tools:

WebSPN: non-Markovian Stochastic Petri nets tool for the analytical solution of very complex models.

MAP: a mobile agent platform based on Java which implements advanced security mechanisms.

DAVID: a video on demand server which guarantees very high level performance with reduced cost.

ArgoPerformance: a tool for the automatic generation of Performance models from a UML description.

GRIDVideo: a grid-based application to provide an high performance virtual video on demand server.
